Cold Rock Skate Ratz clean up local skate parks

Ex-pro skateboarder Trevor Ward never thought he would become a kids skating coach at the end of his career. However, ranking top 10 in the world for Vert skating in the 2000s, Ward is now passionate about creating a safe place for kids to skate and is urging local councils to help him achieve this.

Ward and his business partner, Byron Bay Skateboard coach Flavio Biehl, identified that there was no national program to help develop and rank the skills of young skate boarders. Since the introduction of the sport into the Olympics, the popularity of skateboarding has dramatically increased, however there were no programs available to support up and coming skate boarders. Identifying this gap in the market, the duo have since partnered with Cold Rock to develop a sustainable program, COLD ROCK SKATE RATZ, that doesn’t rely on government funding and coaches kids from total beginner all the way through to completing the hardest of tricks.

COLD ROCK SKATE RATZ is delighted to announce that Cold Rock Ice Creamery has come on board as the program’s national sponsor. Ward credits Cold Rock Ice Creamery with helping engage the kids in the program. Cold Rock Ice Creamery rewards each child who completes each of the 5 levels of the program with a complementary Cold Rock ice cream.

Cold Rock Ice Creamery Director Stan Gordon comments “Cold Rock is excited to not only be involved with the next generation; but to help raise the interest and awareness of skate boarding in Australia. Working with Trevor has been fantastic me personally and we can’t wait to get kids from around the country outside and down to their local skate park … rather than on their mobile devices.”

The aim of the program is to not only encourage and teach children to skateboard, but to also increase positive role models at skate parks and raise parental supervision, giving kids .. our kids a safe environment to skate in. Without children and families using local skate parks they often become abandoned areas that draw trouble to them, and causing issues for local councils.

A huge benefit of the COLD ROCK SKATE RATZ skating and training in local skate parks is that negative and illegal activity is deterred by the presence of parents and other skaters. The COLD ROCK SKATE RATZ program now coaches thousands of up and coming skate boarders around the Eastern seaboard, with the program soon being rolled out across Australia.

“I never thought this is what I would be doing when my skate career ended, but working with kids and seeing them progress is one of the best things I have done. I am so proud that we are taking back the skate parks and showing parents that skating is a great social sport for their kids,” says Ward.

Ward has found that councils are initially wary when he suggests implementing the program at the local skate bowls, but finds that attitudes quickly change when councils see the positive effects the program has on the area, infrastructure, and the community. He hopes more councils will come on board to help him roll out the program.

The COLD ROCK SKATE RATZ program runs each school term and has qualified and fully insured coaches teaching kids how to kick flip and Ollie like the best of the pros.
